Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Antenna Design: A Comparative Study

Abstract: NA detailed study on Ultra-wideband (UWB) antennae equipped Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) applications is done. High gain and wide bandwidth are the two antenna parameters to be considered for deep penetration in GPR applications. Among the many antennae, a comparative study on six different geometry is presented. The six different geometries include Planar, Slot, Horn, Vivaldi, Reflector and Bowtie are compared with respect to physical dimensions, operating frequency, S11, Gain and Bandwidth. Among these six structures, Vivaldi and slot antennae outperform the others with respect to gain as well as bandwidth. Planar monopole antennae are also highly preferred to achieve high gain and wide bandwidth. Use of planar monopole antenna for GPR applications is also suggested.
